Introduction

You’re walking down the isles of your local supermarket and you’ve had to ignore the meat-feast pizza, the rib-eye steak and the bottle of fine Rioja. Instead, you find yourself with a trolley full of baked beans, super-noodles and a bottle of value ketchup – yep, it’s time for a job.

Don’t be scared off by the ‘J’ word – there’s plenty of choice out there to earn a some extra pennies and who knows, you may just enjoy yourself. “But I haven’t got time” I hear you cry. Student jobs don’t have to take-up all of your precious drinking time…I mean studying time…and can generally be quite flexible with their working hours.

So, keep reading to find out about some of the top student jobs that will let you put the beans and noodles back onto the shelves.

Medical’, ‘Trial’, a bad combination of words you may think? It’s easy to be scared off by the idea of medical or clinical trials. However, medical Trials are in fact highly monitored and controlled tests that are responsible for helping people throughout the world. Many of the drugs that we take for granted –aspirin, cough medicine, flu-jabs etc – wouldn’t be available without medical trials.

In addition to the benefit of helping others, if you take part in medical trials there is also quite a lot in it for you! Depending on what type of medical trial you take part in, you may only have to commit for a week, a day or even just a few hours.

Clinical trials don’t have to involve having injections, taking drugs and generally having your body poked around. Why not get paid for sleeping? Sleep studies are likely to involve an overnight stay in a clinic where you simply have to sleep and answer a few questions! Easy! For your time, medical trials can pay £10, £100, £1000 or more, depending on the type of trial you are involved in – not bad for a couple of days work!

You can find out more about medical trials and apply online by visiting Biotrax:

This is a great way to make some extra cash. Promotional work can be fun, well paid and you can meet lots of new people. Big brands want outgoing and confident people to spread the word about their products. You could be playing computer games on the street, handing out free drinks at a train station or generally running around making a fool out of yourself - all in the name of fun and money!

Promotional work is great for students as weekend work is common and the hours are generally quite flexible. However, a professional attitude will be expected of you - the more dedicated and hard working you are, the better chance you will have of getting future work.

Why pay £50 to see a football match, £70 for an exhibition or £100 for a festival ticket when you can get in for free! Better than that, you can get paid too! Working at events can be great fun and can be extremely diverse. You could find yourself handing out flyers, selling programmes, ushering people to their seats, working behind a bar, setting up stage equipment or keeping celebrities company! Events work is rarely the same twice and it can be both fun and interesting.

Have you ever wanted to be in a movie or an episode of Eastenders!? That may not be just a distant dream. TV and film production companies hire extras or background artists to make a scene look believable. The beauty is that it doesn’t matter what you look like. Whatever your shape, size, colour or age, it is likely there is some extra work out there for you.

Extra work can be quite well paid (between £65 and £200 per day) but can also be very demanding. It may sound like a glamorous job but you will probably find periods of time where you will be just sitting around doing nothing – it’s probably a good idea to bring a book along.

As a student, mystery shopping has to be one of the best ways to make some extra money. What does it involve? It involves getting paid to shop! “Is it true?” you ask. The answer is yes; thousands of high-street retail shops want to know that they are providing customers with the best experience possible. The best way for these companies to objectively discover how customers see their shop is to pay people to act like real customers and rate their service.

The best thing about becoming a mystery shopper is that anyone can do it – whether you are tall, short, thin or fat, it doesn’t matter because real customers come in all shapes and sizes!

BE CAREFUL! There are hundreds of websites on the Internet that claim that you can earn thousands of pounds a week doing this work. This sounds great but unfortunately is not the case. While you can earn some good extra cash, work is not always consistent and therefore mystery shopping will not make you a millionaire!

While mystery shopping is a great way to earn some extra money and get a few freebies, you do have to be professional and reliable. Showing up when you are supposed to and submitting your views on time will heighten your chances of being able to do it over and over.

Modelling can be great fun and can sometimes pay well too. You may be thinking that you have to be a Kate Moss look-a-like to enter this industry. However, whatever you look like there may be some work out there for you.

Below you can see some of the places that may require you as a model:

  • Clothing catalogues.
  • Product catalogues (you could be in the next issue of the Argos!)
  • Fashion shows
  • Product launches
  • Magazines
  • Advertisements

If you sign-up with an agency and you have what they are looking for, the chances are that they will work around your studying commitments, which makes this a great student job.

The best job in the world you might think! You need to approach home working with some caution. Beware websites that promise things such as thousands of pounds a week for data-entry. The chances are, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

However, there are things you can do from home that can give you a little extra beer money or more. Finding something you can do from home is great for students as it means you can decide when you work.

Here’s an idea of what you could do:

  • Online Surveys – again, be wary of claims that say you can make thousands from filling in surveys, this simply isn’t the case. However, there are reputable companies out there that will genuinely pay you to fill out forms based on your personal experiences or opinions. Some pay more than others but the more you do, the more you get paid!
  • Online Selling – Ebay is the biggest marketplace on the web and millions of people are making not only a few extra pounds but an entire living. You could make money on Ebay by simply selling last year’s study books, old CDs/DVDs etc. Once you have got used to selling a few things and feel comfortable with Ebay’s marketplace, you may want to step up your selling a notch.
  • If you can find a product that people want to buy and you can buy it for less than the average RRP, then you will be onto a winner! To be successful in making money on Ebay, you need to find a reliable and legal supplier of your products. Ebay has a rating system where your customers can rate their experience of buying from you. So, if you are a good seller, it is likely that future potential customers will buy from you too.
  • The great thing about Ebay is that it has limited risk as everything is provided for you. This includes your shop space (no need for your own website), the payment gateway (Ebay uses PayPal) and millions of people looking at the website everyday!
  • Your own factory – There are many companies that don’t want to pay the expensive costs of running a factory. To get around this they pay people like yourself to do the work from home. Common types of work include folding Christmas/birthday cards, stuffing envelopes etc. This work may not be the most exciting but as you get paid by the quantity you produce, it is entirely up to you when and how much you work – plus, you can do it in front of the TV!

In your summer holidays you probably have ideas of lazing around on a beach in Spain drinking Sangria. However, unless you have some money you may end up in Bognor Regis drinking a cup of cold tea!

So why not combine a holiday with work. Okay, I know it doesn’t sound ideal working on your holiday but you may be surprised by how much fun you have and who you will meet. Businesses in tourist areas around the world scream out for people to work on a temporary basis in a wide variety of areas.

You could find yourself doing any of the following jobs:

  • Promotions Worker – you could be handing out flyers or simply just talking to the general public. However, you may be doing all of this on a hot beach!
  • Bar Staff – Bar work is very popular with students abroad and is a great way to meet people and earn some money on your holiday.
  • Tour Guide – Got the gift of the gab? Companies will always employ confident English speakers to take tourists around famous landmarks and areas of interest. This work can be fun and educational.
  • TEFL – TEFL (Teach English as a Foreign Language) allows you to gain an internationally recognised qualification in just four weeks. Once armed with the qualification you will have a great chance of getting a job in a language school anywhere in the world. Teaching English is a hugely growing business and there are currently more jobs than people actually doing the teaching. Depending on which country you work in and for what school, you may get paid just enough to pay for food and rent or you may even be able to save some money for when you get back home.
